SuiteCommerce Web Stores

The first step in setting up a web store is deciding the type of shopping and checkout domains to use for your web store. Depending on your version of SuiteCommerce, you can choose one of the following:

  • Basic web store — quick and easy to set up, this has a non-secure shopping domain and secure checkout domain

  • Secure web stores — these can be set up as:

    • Single secure domain for both shopping and checkout

    • Separate secure shopping domain and secure checkout domain

Secure and Non-Secure Domains

When a user browses a website, data is transmitted between their browser and the website using a protocol called HTTP, which controls how the data is transmitted.

Secure domains use HTTPS, which is the secure version of Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP). With an HTTPS connection, all communication between a browser and a website is encrypted. HTTPS is currently the industry standard for ecommerce services, and consumers prefer seeing the secure icon in their browser address bar. Including secure technology in your shopping area assures your customers that their activities on your site are safe. Also, search engines often rank secure sites higher than non-secure sites. Operating your web store shopping under a secure domain is one method for improving your search engine optimization (SEO).

To be classified as HTTPS, a domain must have its encryption process certified. This is done by purchasing a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate from a certificate authority. This digital certificate includes the data files that encrypt any information being transferred between a website and browser. See Secure Domains for information on SSL encryption works.

Shopping and Checkout Domain Options

The shopping and checkout domain options available in NetSuite are as follows:

  • Non-secure shopping domain and secure checkout domain – This is how a basic SuiteCommerce web store is set up. In this setup, users browse products and add to cart on the non-secure shopping domain and then move to the secure checkout domain to make the payment. The shopping session data is transferred from the shopping domain to the checkout domain using a URL containing encrypted parameters. See Basic Web Store and Web Store Sessions for more information.

  • Single secure shopping and checkout domain - You can run your shopping and checkout under a single HTTPS domain. A single domain provides your customers with a seamless buying experience. It removes the delays associated with shopping in one domain and moving to another for checkout. See Secure Web Store for more information.

  • Secure shopping domain and separate secure checkout using default checkout domains or subdomains - You can use an SSL certificate to secure the shopping portion of your web store under an HTTPS domain. You can choose between:

    • a single, secure shopping domain paired with a single, secure checkout domain

    • multiple shopping web stores with a secure domain for each and then a separate single domain for checkout

In both cases, you can use either the default secure checkout domain hosted by NetSuite, checkout.netsuite.com, or you can suppress NetSuite branding on the checkout domain by using one of the unbranded secure subdomains provided by NetSuite.

See Secure Web Store for more information.

  • Secure custom checkout domain – You can create your own custom secure domain to use for web store checkout. You can use it with either a secure or a non-secure shopping domain. See Secure Web Store for more information.

Note

Setting up a secure domain requires extended setup steps and incurs additional cost.
